How to Find a Business Mentor
Hey, this is Alzay Calhoun with Coveted Consultant.com today I'm talking about how to find a mentor and I'm borrowing some content from a gentleman named Jeff Hoffman. Jeff Hoffman is the founder of the Priceline.com Company. He also co-founder of ColorJar and investment firm. And he was talking about how to find a mentor and this is something that as consultant we don't talk a lot about but if you're trying to grow your business you need to be connected with people who are bigger than you who run a bigger business who are further down the path than you. And you need to understand how they do business and you need a relationship in order to do that because there are some things that you can't see coming that they already know about. And it's simply watching what they do, you know watching how they run their business may not be enough you need to have a relationship to kind of get behind the scenes.
How do you do that? How do you connect with someone honestly and with integrity? So he provided a short framework that I thought was pretty smart and pretty healthy so I'm sharing it with you now. So the first thing he said was find common ground with that person you're trying to connect with find something in common with them whether it be school, hobby, passions, family of origin, pets whatever it is find a connection point.
The second major point he made was connect with honest intentions. So in other words tell them what you want. So if you want feedback on your consulting company on yoru strategy perhaps then just tell them that. If you're looking for promotional partners and you think they can help you find promotional partners tell them that. If they know someone that you really want to meet then tell them that. Whatever it is just give them the honest, give them your honest intention whatever it is you're trying to accomplish.
The next piece is offer something of value to them. So maybe you could help connect them to someone who could help them. Maybe you can share some information along their passions or interests. If both of you like archery and you know where the best archery bows are found then you can help him find a new place to buy some new archery bows. Or offer a complementary service. So if you do something specific with your consulting firm that can help him or help her move their business forward well then maybe you offer that free.
The next step here is ask for the appropriate next step. So whether you invite them out to lunch or you meet them at their office or you set up a phone meeting or whatever it is that you just make it easy for them. Make that first step an easy one for them to complete so you're not trying to overwhelm them. Remember you need their help. You're looking for their advice and their input.
So I found this to be simple but also very smart because it allows you to connect with someone who you don't know in an authentic manner with integrity so you don't feel like you're begging or pleading for someone's time. So use this. Reach out to someone who's bigger than you, faster than you, stronger than you in a business perspective, connect, and let's see what develops.
