How to Become a Life Coach in 7 Steps | Coach Sean Smith

Contact us to Add a Trainer

If you want to learn how to become a life coach, especially in transformational life coaching, I'll give you the 7 steps in this video. After 12 years in the life coaching industry, I’ve seen every template, model, philosophy & blueprint there is, and I will synthesize all the confusing information into a simple foundational game plan you can follow to build a successful coaching business.

Most coaches are not following these foundational steps, they are looking for shortcuts, quick fixes, cookie cutter approaches or other B.S. ways to “hack” success in this industry. Those will never work long term. Stick to these foundational truths.

========

First, you have to have the desire to commit to this industry, coming from a place of service and wanting to help others change their lives. Coaching is unique because YOU are the product, so all the normal business challenges and fears will be multiplied at least 100x!

Next, you have to have Competence. Like any industry, you have to learn the tools of the trade by getting a life coach certification online or in person (my suggestion). In transformational coaching especially, there’s a LOT to learn! And unfortunately, because the industry is so focused on quickly making money as a life coach, there’s not enough focus on being a GOOD COACH! Great marketing and more website traffic or social media strategies won’t sustain a low quality coaching product.

The 3rd step is certainty, which is the biggest missing piece of the industry. If you don’t have a deeply rooted conviction in your abilities to help people, they will feel it and they’ll never buy your services. For a deeper dive into the certainty discussion, watch this video:

The 4th step is to identify your seeker, or your ideal client. Who is already seeking the knowledge you want to teach? This is the most important marketing step, but most coaches don’t do it properly so they constantly struggle. For a longer training on that discussion, go here:

Next, get in front of them. This is simple, go where they are. Instead of trying to change their buying patterns, get in the pathway that they’re already traveling and into the thoughts that they’re already thinking. It’s much easier to go with the flow of your market than trying to change people.

The 6th step is to give them an experience, instead of selling them an expectation.
The world is sick and tired of buying and then being disappointed in purchasing the expectations they’ve been sold for years and years now. They’ve become suspicious and don’t trust marketers generally. Because of that, we have to give them something they can feel.

Finally, offer them more of what they just experienced. They understand the value you provide, so it’s a no brainer for the right person to continue by purchasing your products or services.

All the other marketing details depend on what type of business you want to build, what your market will be, your own unique skills & strengths, etc. Don’t search for the strategies without a solid foundation.

My seeker is young female gamers who have gone through life more confident in the world of games than the real world due to being misunderstood and having low self-esteem. They want to find their true passion in life and engage in the real world with confidence using the skills they may not realize they already learned while gaming.

Extremely clear, with MASSIVE heart and care behind it as you help these girls and women re-engage with themselves so the world isn’t as scary anymore. <3 <3 <3 If there's anything we can do to support you in your mission, please let us know!

Thank you for this video. I’m trying to find my nitch and my target audience. I’m new with this and all I want to do is help others who are looking to better themselves and leave all the excuses at the door. Could you tell me, where I can go to get the training I need to advance in my career? Please if you could, send me an email at CDSmithLifeCoach@outlook.com. Thank you for all you do.

Bless you coach Sean. I am going to email you…I love everything you say and feel and I think that it’s the down right truth. I will be emailing you next week so I can explain who I am as person and what my desires are as a coach. I need self mastery skills and I love that you have the right frame of mind and the information I’ve been searching for. Thank you for your service.

I have a unique ability to understand people and animals. I want to use my gift to help people in personal relationships and relationships with their pets. I want to be a life coach to help in those areas.

Oh man Sean i just loved you Jacky Chan impressions at the end of this clip. That was just adorable. However in the words of Mister Spock I am very glad to see you did not get injured in any way. Jokes aside though this is a most insightful, informative and well-structured upload. Thank you sooo much. I am blown away.

    1. coachseansmith

@Derick Williams =) Wow, it’s a pleasure to be connected with you all the way across the world, my friend. Thank you! Please, if there’s anything I can do to support you, ask away!

    2. Derick Williams

@coachseansmithmighty kind of you to reply and confirm that nobody was injured. I only recently discovered your posts but please be assured that I will follow them with religious conviction. I am a disciple of structure and you have certainly nailed it. Please know that I am most grateful. Keep up the good work. All the way from Cape Town – South Africa.

The best 3 things to do are: 1) Join a lot of their groups online, subscribe to their blogs, watch their videos – become one of them so you can see what they are searching for and being exposed to in the market, 2) Study 5-10 of the successful coaches and programs being offered to them so you can start to model some of the elements of success, and 3) Talk to as many of your potential ‘seekers’ as you possibly can – ask them questions, find out what they really want, what they would buy, etc. If you want more support, you can book a free session with one of my coaches at http://www.coachseansmith.com/bookmycall 😉 I hope that helps.

My friends and family have been coming to me since I was a teenager for advice. I am now 43 and looking to find a career that feeds my passion. I will work on becoming certified but how do I choose who my seeker is? I posted a poll on my social media page this morning asking for those who have seeked advice, what was it? Family, friends, life, jobs, happiness? Everyone said “all the above”. Lol!

    1. coachseansmith

Absolutely, Adria. There are plenty of people out there searching for the knowledge you have learned in your life. Start talking with conviction, fueled by service, and they will be attracted to you over time. Study where they are, and put your message in front of them however you can.

  8. Breiana France

Hello I just discovered your channel and am already deeply invested in your content! I want to pursue life coaching but more so focus on the relationship area, love how to attract it how to manifest and have healthy relationships. Any specific certifications I need that’s tailored to that and not so broad?

    1. coachseansmith

@Breiana France Yeah, I totally agree. Because it’s a deep dive into all human behavior, I think you’ll not only find a lot of value in that specific focus, but it will give you a way to be distinct in your messaging when you talk about the issues in the dating world w/ narcissists specifically. 🙂

    2. coachseansmith

@Breiana France Yeah, I believe you’ll find what you’re looking for, even though our course isn’t specifically focused only on relationships, so we don’t necessarily use those words and those exact examples. The best thing to do is book a free consultation call with us so we can support you getting the clarity you’re looking for with a private conversation. You can book that call here: http://www.coachseansmith.com/bookmycall

    3. Breiana France

coachseansmith Okay thank you so much if I can learn more on narcissism and soul ties and verbally abusive relationship and what is the foundation of these topics I believe this program can be a good fit for me

    4. coachseansmith

Hi, Breiana. I don’t know of any specific relationship certifications that I’m familiar enough with to make a suggestion. Our certification are more about human behavior, that can be applied to relationships if you want. There are plenty of relationship examples, but the certification doesn’t have relationship in the title.
